My stay in Luxor with the families Hofny and Hamdy was a great success. I have really enjoyed the delicious breakfasts, lunches and dinners that Sabrine and Asma prepared every day for all of us. We sat on the ground in the living, around a great round metal plate on which the dishes were served on little plates.
‘You kept us busy’, said Mohamed with a little irony at the end of the week that I stayed with them. ‘We did with you in one week what other visitors do in three weeks’.
I was also impressed by the competence and the patience of Haisam and Karim, the two guides who showed me the treasures of the Antiquity. The first during a visit to the Valley of the Kings and the Queens, and the second when we went to Karnak, theTemple and the museum of Luxor, the other temples along the road to Aswan and the splendid temples of Al Deir al Bahari and Medinet Habu.
Mohamed was often so kind as to bring me to the west bank of the Nile in the evenings, on board of the ‘Hamty Dumty’, in order to have a beer in the garden of a café of one of his friends. The receptionist of the Winter palace hotel allowed me to sit at one of the tables in the garden close to the swimming pool, where you also can have lunch, and where I enjoyed delicious cold drinks.
I want to thank once more both families that were so kind to me and so welcoming!

J’ai beaucoup apprécié les délicieux petits déjeuners, déjeuners et diners que Sabrina et Asma préparaient chaque jour pour nous tous et auxquels on m’invitait toujours. Nous étions assis parterre dans le salon, autour d’un grand plat rond en métal sur lequel étaient placés les plats dans des petites assiettes.
‘You kept us busy’, disait Mohamed avec une légère ironie à la fin de la semaine que j’ai passée chez eux. ‘We did with you in one week what other visitors do in three weeks’. J’ai aussi été très impressionné par la compétence et la patience de Haisam et Karin, deux guides qui m’ont guidé là où se trouvent les trésors de l´Antiquité. L’un lors d’une visite à la Vallée des Rois et des Reines, et l’autre quand nous sommes allés à Karnak, le temple et le musée de Louxor, les autres temples le long de la route vers Assouan et les splendides temples de Al Deir al Bahari et de Medinet Habu.
Mohamed avait souvent la gentillesse de m´emmener à la rive ouest du Nil vers le soir, à bord du ‘Hamty Dumty’, pour aller boire une bière dans le jardin d’un café d’un de ses amis, en face du splendide Palais d’Hiver. Dans le Palais d’Hiver la réceptionniste de l’hôtel m’autorisait de m’installer dans le jardin à une des tables près de la piscine, où on peut aussi déjeuner, et j’y ai savouré des délicieuses boissons rafraichissantes.
Je tiens à remercier encore une fois les deux familles qui ont été si gentilles et accueillantes vers moi!

Ik genoot van de heerlijke ontbijten, lunches en avondmalen die Sabrina en Asma iedere dag voor iedereen bereidden, en waar ik altijd zo vriendelijk voor was uitgenodigd. Wij zaten altijd op de vloer van de woonkamer, rondom een grote metalen schaal waar de gerechten op bordjes werden geplaatst.
‘You kept us busy’, zei Mohamed met een lichte ironie aan het einde van de week die ik bij hun had doorgebracht. ‘We did with you in one week what other visitors do in three weeks’.
Ik was ook zeer onder de indruk van de deskundigheid en het geduld van Haisam en Karim, de twee gidsen die mij hebben rondgeleid daar waar de schatten uit de Oudheid zijn, de ene tijdens een bezoek aan de Valleien der Koningen en der Koninginnen, en de ander toen wij naar Karnak, de tempel en het museum van Luxor, de andere tempels op weg naar Aswan en de prachtige tempels van Al Deir al Bahari en Habu, zijn gegaan.
Mohamed was zo lief om mij vaak tegen de avond mee te nemen naar de westelijke oever van de Nijl, aan boord van ‘Hamty Dumty’, om in de tuin van een bevriende cafehouder een biertje te drinken, tegenover het prachtige Winter Palace.
In Winter Palace mocht ik van de receptionniste van het hotel in de tuin vlakbij het zwembad zitten, aan een van de tafeltjes aldaar, waar men ook kan lunchen, en heb daar genoten van heerlijk verfrissende drankjes.
Ik wil de beide families die zo aardig en gastvrij voor mij zijn geweest nogmaals bedanken!
